I’ve been a beauty journalist for nearly a decade, and in that time have learned which formulations are a cut above the rest. But though I test lots of new skincare and bodycare launches every month, there are still those select products that I gravitate back towards whenever possible.
I have very oily skin that’s prone to the odd bit of congestion and redness, so my skincare priorities tend to be lightweight nourishment. And as I’m in my thirties, I won’t say no any fine-line smoothing and collagen-boosting effects, either – and I therefore tend to look for science-backed, expert recommended brands that I know I can trust. Here are some of my current and long-standing favourites.
SkinCeuticals Phyto A+ Brightening Treatment
There’s been increased buzz around azelaic acid in the last few years, but this is without question my favourite product containing it. This lightweight serum-meets-lotion soaks in easily and really calms down any redness, promoting a more even-toned complexion overall.
Alastin TransFORM Bodycare Complex
I admit that I’ve been a bit neglectful of my bodycare routine in the past, but have got a lot better at taking care of the skin on my body as well as my face. An aesthetics doctor recently got me onto this techy bodycare formulation from Alastin, which works to both deeply hydrate and boost collagen and elastin production – all without a greasy or sticky feel.
Medi8 Crystal Retinal Serum
Something I wholeheartedly believe – which is arguably true of any product – is that the best retinoid for you is the one that you’ll stick to using. Medik8’s Crystal Retinal formula is truly one of the best on the market and has been my go-to for years. It’s incredibly well-formulated and is key to my skin looking its best; any time I’ve taken a break from it I’ve noticed a difference in my skin. I’ve been using the 6 for a couple of years and am about to progress on to 10.
Heliocare 360º Oil Free Gel SPF 50
Anyone with a modicum of skincare knowledge will tell you that sun protection is a daily non-negotiable. Heliocare is one of those trusted brands that’s regularly recommended by derms and other experts, and the oil-free gel offers both a high level of protection at SPF 50 and an oily skin-friendly texture.
Meder Circa-Night Restorative Face Cream
I love this night cream and genuinely think my skin looks well-rested the morning after I’ve applied it. It’s designed to counter the effects of sleep deprivation by rejuvenating skin cells to mimic the effects of a good night’s sleep (ideal if, like me, you are a Bad Sleeper). I tend to use a dedicated night cream when my skin needs extra nourishment or on the alternate nights I’m not using my retinoid.
